Yeast Allergy
Yeast allergy is one of the most common types of allergy in the world. It occurs when your body’s immune system detects the yeast or foreign substance containing yeast as a health risk, and as a precautionary measure, causes a reaction to happen in order to stave off infection and disease. Unfortunately for individuals who suffer from yeast allergy, yeast is a generally harmless substance to the average person who does not suffer from yeast allergy.
Types of Yeast Allergy
There are two different types of yeast allergy that individuals may suffer from. These types are:
1) Allergy to foods that contain yeast. These foods can include bread, beer, desserts, wine, alcohol, and many other foods that we consume often.
2) Candidasis, also known as a yeast infection within the body itself.
Symptoms of Food Yeast Allergy
Like any other food allergy, yeast allergy can show itself in a wide array of different symptoms. Some of these symptoms include:
• Fatigue, or extreme tiredness after consuming yeast
• Headache or migraine
• Nasal congestion
• Itchy nose, eyes, and facial features
• Sore throat
The most severe symptom an individual suffering from yeast infection may experience is anaphylaxis. Anaphylaxis is a potentially life threatening reaction that can affect multiple organs within the individuals body. Some of the common symptoms of anaphylaxis include:
• Constriction of Airways in the lungs
• Anaphylactic Shock
• Drop In Blood Pressure
• Higher than usual pulse
• Dizziness, and nausea as a result
• Confusion
• Loss Of Consciousness
If you believe you or someone you know may be experiencing an anaphylactic reaction due to yeast allergy or some other allergy, it is important that you seek medical help immediately. Often times, the medical team will inject epinephrine (also known as an epi pen), to help reduce the symptoms associated with anaphylaxis and keep the individual out of anaphylactic shock.
Treatment and Prevention of Yeast Allergy
Many foods contain yeast. This can be hard for individuals suffering from yeast allergy to avoid. In order to properly avoid foods containing yeast, you should consult your doctor about yeast-less brand names and foods. Also try to form a habit of reading labels on each and every food that you eat.
