Vegetable Allergy

Vegetable allergies are closely related to food allergies. The reactions are immediate.
Irritant dermatitis, allergic dermatitis, asthma and rhinitis are common allergic diseases of vegetable products. In some cases, Extrinsic allergic alveolitis, allergic photodermatitis and allergic urticaris can be seen.
Ways to prevent allergic diseases to vegetable products:
• Heating the vegetables or cooking them can reduce than chances of an allergic reaction.
• Fish oil reduces the chances of an asthma attack.
• Meals consumed are small.
• Drink the right amount of fluids (water, juice, etc.)
• Take any preservatives or colourents out of meals (or any other identified allergens)
• Consume the right amount of vitamins A, C, B6, and zinc.
• The riper the vegetable, the higher the chances of an allergic reaction.
5 % of people suffering from asthma may have immediate reactions to food products that cotain sulphur.
Compounds containing sulphur are added to foods to add colour, bleaching, and to prevent oxidation.
Sulfites destroy the vitamin B1; it doesn’t allow foods that contain a lot of vitamins.
Symptoms of vegetable allergy:
• Victim experiences various symptoms; weals, irritation, erythema, rash, swelling, and vesicles or included.
• Symptoms occur usually in the upper torso.
• Most symptoms occur along the mouth area. (e.g. itching, swelling, blistering) – This is called oral allergy syndrome.
• Trouble Breathing, speaking, or swallowing
• May experience cramps, diarrhea, vomiting.
• Blood pressure drops, rapid heartbeat, loss of consciousness.
Foods that may contain sulphite:
• Beverages: soft drinks, juices.
• Condiments: vinegar, pickle, salad dressings
• Fish: canned of fresh seafood, shellfish
• Fruits/Vegetables: dried fruit, purees, concentrated fruit juice.
• Dried or canned soup.
• Syrups and jams
Allergies can also be caused by preservative sodium benzoate, colourants like tartrazine, flavor enhancers like MSG and salicylates. Please see a local doctor if you are still experiencing any troubles with your allergies.
