Sulfite Allergy

Allergies are caused by the body trying to fend of foriegn objects that it considers to be harmful. The immune system usually causes the over reactions that we call allergy symptoms in an attempt to protect itself. Sulfites of sulfating agents are very common preservatives used in various food and medication. Sulfites have been used as food additives for a very long time, but have also been known to occur naturally in fermented fruits.

Sulfite allergy is especially dangerous for individuals suffering from asthma. This is because the sulfite allergens usually increase the asthma symptoms. This can also be caused when the individual accidentally inhales sulfite fumes. Other symptoms of sulfite allergy include hives, swelling, and anaphylaxis. Anaphylaxis affects several different organ systems, and may cause swelling of the mouth and throat. It is very important that if anyone you know is experiencing severe anaphylaxis symptoms that you contact medical help immediately. Anaphylaxis can be very dangerous, especially if the individual goes into anaphylatic shock.

Sulfite allergens in medicine are most commonly found in intravenous and inhaled medications. It is important that you tell your doctor about sulfite allergy, so they can make sure to prescribe medications that you will not have an adverse reaction to.

Most doctors test for sulfite allergy in a variety of different skin tests. Since skin problems are the most common symptom of sulfite allergy, this is the most common way of testing. If the diagnosis is confirmed, most individuals will also see an allergist who will perform several different breathing tests to ensure that your breathing function is still not being negatively effected.

Sulfites are generally added to foods to preserve them for long periods of time. Sulfites fight off bacteria, and can slow the browning of fruit, vegetables and seafood. For most people, they are not even really aware that they are ingesting sulfites when they do. For individuals who suffer from sulfite allergy, fighting this disease can become quite the task.

If you have been diagnosed with sulfite allergy, it is important that you consult your doctor to discuss what foods are okay for your to eat. Most organic foods do not contain any sulfites, but in rare exceptions, even organic foods do. It is also important that you develop the habit of label reading if you suffer from sulfite allergy.
