Soy Allergy

Soy allergy, like many other allergies, derives from an over-reaction by your immune system to allergens that it perceives to be foreign substances that could present a threat to your health. The ‘symptoms’ we experience from allergies are present in order to help fight off infection, disease and illness. Soy allergy affects a little over one in every one hundred individuals in the United States. Soy is a very common product and is contained in many of the foods we buy without even thinking about it. Children are the most susceptible to soy allergy, and most grow out of it before they reach adulthood.

Symptoms of soy allergy are usually mild, and severe reactions are less common with soy than other food allergies. In rare cases, soy allergy can cause a life threatening reaction called anaphylaxis. Deaths that are associated with soy allergy are most common in individuals who also suffer from peanut allergy as well as asthma. If you suffer from soy allergy, it is important that you become aware of which products may or may not contain soy, and be as careful as possible not to consume these products.

Symptoms of Soy Allergy

The symptoms of soy allergy are generally mild, but still quite uncomfortable. There are a number of prescription medication used to treat the symptoms that are associated with soy allergy, as well as some over the counter alternatives.
Soy allergy symptoms include:
• Hives and Itchy Skin
• Swelling of facial features
• Canker Sores
• Wheezing and other breathing complications
• Nausea, abdominal pain and vomiting
• Dizziness
• Tingling of the mouth or throat

Anaphylaxis

Rarely, a very serious condition called anaphylaxis is caused by soy allergy. This condition is more likely to occur in individual who also experience other food allergies that accompany their soy allergy.
Symptoms of anaphylaxis can include:

• Constriction of Airways in the throat and lungs
• Shock
• Severe Drop In Blood Pressure
• Heightened Pulse
• Dizziness
• Confusion
• Loss Of Consciousness

If you believe you or someone you know may be experiencing anaphylaxis it is important that seek medical help immediately, as anaphylaxis can be a life threatening condition if it goes untreated.
Many infant formulas also contain soy. It is important that if you believe your child may be having an allergic reaction to soy that you consult your doctor immediately.
