Skin Allergies: How to manage them?

Skin allergyWhen allergies are just irritating you, it is not a big issue. However, if they start affecting your daily routine then it becomes a problem. Managing skin allergies is a three step process: 1. get to know your condition, 2. find out what is causing it and 3. look after your skin.

Allergens and irritants are the things that cause allergies in the first place. The adverse reaction involves release of chemicals that lead to inflammation and all other symptoms of an allergy. You can increase your knowledge on the matter through the internet and the library. Also consult your general practitioner.

Next comes the hard part. Find out what you are allergic to. Identifying the allergens and irritants causing the reaction can help you eliminate them. This is not easy because more than 3000 allergens are present indoors and outdoors. You can be allergic to natural things like fruits or artificial substances even. Knowing the real cause of your skin allergy can be very tricky if chemicals have been added to a natural substance to make artificial products and your body reacts adversely to it. An example is latex. It is made by adding proteins and chemicals to the sap of rubber tree. So, latex gloves or clothes having latex in them can cause an allergy.

Another queer allergy is the nickel allergy. Many metallic products like zips, scissors and handles have nickel in them. Even a body piercing can risky if you are allergic to nickel. Such a person should be very careful when dealing with metallic substances. Anything could lead to a reaction.

Lastly, take good care of your skin. Cut your nails short to avoid infection caused by scratching. Keep your skin soft and moisturized. Get a medicated moisturizer for the inflamed areas. Use mild soaps and do not take hot showers. Soak up in a warm bath after adding baking soda or oatmeal to the water. These are great soothing agents. Dry the skin gently afterwards and moisturize it well. You might have to avoid sports like swimming to keep reactions at bay.

Do not worry though! If these steps are followed, a normal life is possible for you too.
