Shrimp Allergies

Shrimp allergy is a shelflish allergy that can cause very severe reactions in individuals that experience severe reactions from the proteins and allergens in fish products. This reaction is an over reaction by the immune system to foreign substances that it deems to be dangerous. There are many different symptoms from shrimp allergy, the most common of which are hives, nausea, diarrhea, problems breathing, itchy skin and eyes. In the most severe cases shrimp allergy can lead to severe cases of anaphylaxis shock.

Keep in mind that fried foods from restaurant or fast food places may be fried int he same pan or oil as the shrimp or shellfish. Because the symptoms from shrimp allergy tend to be so much more severe than other allergies out there, you have to be that much more careful to make sure that you avoid shrimp and shellfish allergens.

Most individuals who suffer from shrimp or shellfish allergies pick up the habit of reading the labels on all of the food that they buy. Although many items do not contain any shrimp or shellfish allergens, it is always better to be safe than sorry. If you find that you do suffer from some form of shellfish allergy, it is important that you understand that you are much more likely than the average individual to develop other types of allergies, and you should always be extra careful when eating seafood.

There are several different skin tests available that usually yield a definitive answer. Most of your symptoms will arrive within an hour of eating the allergens, so it should be very easy to spot where the symptoms are coming from if seafood is not a regular part of your diet.

Food allergies appear to be inherited. Most children who experience some form of food allergy end up growing out of it by the time they reach adulthood. This is because the more often your immune system is exposed to these foreign substances that it considers to be harmful, the less sensitive your system will become.

It is important that if you are with anyone who is experiencing a serious reaction to shrimp or shellfish that you call the paramedics immediately. The best thing you can do for someone in that situation is to call for medical help as soon as possible. In some cases, anitihistamines can reduce the symptoms slightly. remember to consult with your doctor before administering any medications in the treatment of shrimp and shellfish allergy.
