Penicillin Allergy
Allergies are the over reaction by our immune system to a foreign substance that it deems as harmful. In most cases, these substances are generally harmless and the symptoms caused by the allergy cause more discomfort that the substance ever could. Many people experience allergy symptoms after ingesting the popular prescription medicine penicillin. Penicillin, Amoxicillin, and other similar antibiotics are usually used to treat bacterial infections. For millions of individuals worldwide, using these medications is really just not an option.
Keep in mind that not all negative reactions to penicillin necessarily mean that you have an allergy. An allergic reaction is caused by the immune system and can cause a wide range of symptoms, the most dangerous of which is known as anaphylaxis. Treating an allergic reaction to penicillin may involve taking another medication, or even just waiting the symptoms out until they subside.
Symptoms of Penicillin Allergy
• Hives, rash, or skin irritation including but not limited to itchy skin.
• Wheezing, or other breathing complications
• Swollen facial features
If you notice any of these symptoms appearing after you have taken penicillin, it is important that you contact your doctor for a proper diagnosis. These symptoms may also be caused by other allergies and are not necessarily penicillin related.
Anaphylactic Reactions and Symptoms
Anaphylaxis is a rare, serious reaction very few people have been known to have after ingesting penicillin. This type of reaction is more common in individuals who are more sensitive to penicillin than the average individual who suffers from penicillin allergy. There are a number of symptoms that come along with anaphylactic reactions, and it is important that you seek medical attention as soon as you identify any of the following symptoms:
• Heightened Pulse
• Shock
• Dizziness, Fainting, or Loss Of Consciousness
• Flushed, Pale Skin
• Hives, Itchy Skin, or Other Skin Irritation
• Constriction Of the Airways, Leading To Problems Breathing
• Nausea, Abdominal Pain, Vomiting and Diarrhea
Individuals suffering from penicillin allergy should avoid taking a number of antibiotics including Amoxicillin, Ampicillin, Nafcillin, and Dicloxacillin. All of these medications do contain penicillin and can be potentially dangerous for individuals who suffer from penicillin allergy.
