Hayfever Allergy

Believe it or not, allergy is easily the most common illness across the globe. One in every five Americans are afflicted with some form of allergy, and this number has been increasing steadily since the 1980’s across all ethnic, gender, and age groups. An allergic reaction is triggered by the immune system when it comes in contact with a substance that it detects as harmful. These effects can include symptoms as potent as hives, swelling, or trouble breathing, or as small as flushed skin.

Allergic Rhinitis, or Hay Fever allergy, is an allergic reaction to pollen. This particular type of allergy is called Hay Fever because it takes place during the “haying season”, when pollen is especially plentiful in the air that we breathe. Many different types of plants are known to release pollen into the air, which is the main cause for individuals who experience hay fever allergy. Some of the tree’s that release pollen into the air include hazel trees, willow, birch and alder.

Early symptoms of Hay fever include sneezing, nasal congestion and red eyes or eye irratation. Most often, a clear runny nose is present in an individual who is experiencing the effects of Hay fever. Occasionally individuals suffering from Hay fever allergy have been known to experience a loss of the ability to taste. Others experienced symptoms including wheezing, shortness or breath or trouble breathing and flushed face.

Hay fever is diagnosed by a doctor after looking at the particular patients symptom history. Diagnosing Hay fever depends upon how frequently your symptoms occour and the severity of these symptoms, along with a full evaluation of your day to day life, including your exposure to pets along with other allergens.

Hay fever allergy has been known to lead to other dieseases and complications with prolonged allergic rhinitis. Some of these complications include sinusitis (the inflammation of the air cavities of the passages of the nose) and asthma (inflammation of the lung airways) and also has been known to affect the quality of life for those suffering.

There are many different medications available for treating the symptoms that come with hay fever. These medications include fast and short acting antihistamines, nasal sprays, decongestants, allergy shots and various other herbal remedies. While most of these medications do not effect their users negatively, many antihistamines have been known to cause drowsiness and effect a persons ability to drive a motor vehicle or operate heavy machinery. It is important that you take every precaution when taking these medications, and learn how they effect you as an individual before operating any large machinery.
