Food Allergies: The cause and the cure

Food allergies are very common all around the world. Simply put, you have an allergy when your immune system starts fighting the thing you are allergic to. Substances that cause such allergies are called food allergens. Some people confuse the terms food allergy and food intolerance. The body organs react in food intolerance whereas the immune system does all the working in a food allergy.

Food allergies attack three points in our body: breathing, skin and digestive system. Signs like itching and rashes appear in a matter of hours after consuming the food allergen. The rashes affect the face mostly and internal reactions start from the throat and the tongue. In severe cases, the person stops breathing due to swelling in the throat. Other symptoms are vomiting, nausea and diarrhea. Regular consumption of food allergens can lead to severe reactions and the first step to be taken is the identification of food allergens you have to avoid in any case.

Once the allergen has been identified, it becomes easier to treat your food allergy. Eggs, shellfish, peanuts and milk cause the most food allergies. Before consuming a food product, make sure you know its contents are safe for your body. Peanut allergens require extra care because they are usually available in tinned form and contain allergens.

If you are taking medication, keep a check on your diet as well. Take time to plan a safe diet and eat healthy. It will not only keep attacks away but also help you feel better overall.
