Dog Allergies: Do You Really Have To Get Rid Of Your Pet?

German Shepherd“But I cannot give up my pet!” This is a sentiment that is said in every doctor’s office when there is a patient who suffers from dog allergies. If your doctor tries to convince you to get rid of your dog, do not listen. There are alternatives to giving up your pet in most cases.

Statistics show that about 11 million people suffer from dog allergies, and they do not all give up their pets. Most will either suffer through the consequences of the allergies, or they will find a way to deal with the symptoms. Doctors do not really understand unless they have a pet, that your dog is an integral part of the family.

Although a physician may suggest that it is your dog that you are allergic to, it is a good idea to ask for a referral to an allergist. An allergist is a specialist in allergies. He can test you to see what it is that you are specifically allergic to and help you get relief.

An Allergist Confirmed That It Is My Dog That Causes Allergies

Since you know it is your dog it is important to note that it is not your dog per se that you are allergic to. It is something that your dog does. What is a good idea is to pay attention to when you have the allergic reaction. Is it when you pet your dog, or sit near it? It could be that you are allergic to their dander. This is the flakes of skin that your pet lets go as they shed or when you brush them.

Do you seem to start sneezing, or break out in hives after it licks your face or hands? This could mean that you are allergic to dog’s saliva. If you find yourself having an allergic reaction after you pick up their poop you might find that it is their urine that you are allergic to. The general category of dog allergies is a misnomer because it really depends on how you experience the allergic reactions.

There Is Hope For Allergy Sufferers

There are many ways to keep allergic reaction under control. You can go to the allergist and receive either oral medication or allergy shots that are geared to desensitize you to the problem areas.

Many health food stores offer natural products that can help fight allergies. Some of them are grapefruit seed extract, black cumin seed oil, parasite cleanse and Quercitin.

Vacuum your house more often and make sure the pets do not get up on the furniture or sleep in your bed. HEPA filters are great because they are able to catch very small particles from the air and thus trap allergens that cause you problems.

If your allergies are very severe you might want to look for a dog that is less-allergenic, such as Poodle or Poodle Hybrid, cocker spaniel or Labrador retriever.

The bottom line is that you do not have to give up your pet when you have dog allergies. You should first try to get relief from dog allergies by using some of the methods above.
