Cat Allergy
Allergies occur when your body’s immune system detects an unrecognizable substance, chemical, or composition, and then tries to ward off the harmful effects that this substance may bring. In most cases, these substances will not bring any harmful effects, and your body’s way of dealing with them is usually much more unpleasant than the actual reaction to the substance would be. However, you will want to thank your immune system later when it acts appropriately and wards off a substance that would actually do damage.
Cat allergy is a very common allergy, especially in the United States, where it is in the top 10 most commonly diagnosed allergies. Individuals with cat allergy experience an allergic reaction to cat glycoprotein Fel d 1, which is secreted by the cat’s sebaceous glands. These glands are located in the cat’s skin, but the glycoprotein is also commonly found in cat saliva. The reaction is categorized as a histamine reaction, and is often off-set by the use of popular antihistamines such as Benadryl.
Symptoms
Symptoms of cat allergy, while unpleasant, are generally mild and not life altering. The symptoms of cat allergy are comparable to the symptoms of seasonal outdoor allergies, but one should always consult with their doctor before self diagnosing any allergy, as the symptoms could potentially be part of a larger problem.
- Red, Itchy, Irritated, Watery eyes. Many individuals report that these symptoms can be alleviated by using Visine or another over the counter eye drop.
- Sneezing, Running Nose, and Nasal Congestion. These symptoms can usually be alleviated by using an antihistamine or over the counter decongestant.
- Trouble Breathing – If you experience breathing problems, contact medical professionals right away.
- Elevated or Swollen Skin After Being Scratched.
Many individuals who suffer from cat allergy have been able to desensitize themselves from the allergy. If you find that your symptoms are mild, and would rather try to tough out the symptoms rather than get rid of the cat, many individuals have seen their symptoms almost completely disappear over a period of time. If you would like to lessen the symptoms all together, try avoiding cats. Discuss with your doctor about which medications are right for your situation and always make sure to receive a formal diagnosis.
