Basics of Allergies

Despite the fact that allergies are quite common these days, many people do not know the symptoms and treatment of allergic reactions. If you are not aware of the symptoms, you cannot find out about the allergen either. Therefore, the first thing you have to do is identify your particular allergy and then find out what is causing it and how you can prevent that from happening.

Allergies are caused when your body’s immune system is weak enough to react to a seemingly benign substance like a particular food item, dust or pollen. These substances are known as allergens. Your body’s immune system requires healthy white blood cells in order to operate properly. These white blood cells constantly need oxygen through which they provide strength to your immune system. Your immune system makes some mistakes which lead to reduction of oxygen quantity to the white blood cells and consequently the immune system becomes weak and prone to external attacks and allergies.

Symptoms of the allergy can vary from person to person. Moreover, the symptoms also depend on the intensity of the allergic reaction. However, the most common symptoms of all the allergies are watery eyes, itching, coughing and chest congestion.

Often people are allergies to foods like peanuts, eggs and milk and these allergies are easily treatable. All you need to do is stick to a diet plan which does not include the specific allergens. In addition to that, you can regularly get shots from an allergist or a general physician.

As compared to food allergies, pet allergies take longer to treat. Even if exposed only once to the specific animal, you can show symptoms of allergy for a long time even if the pet is not around anymore. People love keeping dogs and cats as pets but once you become allergic to either of them, it is hard to treat the allergy.

Some people are allergic to latex which is a substance artificially made with the sap of the rubber tree. Mostly, latex gloves are what cause the allergic reaction. There are some clothing articles which often have latex and can cause a reaction to a person. Individuals suffering from asthma in particular should avoid latex in any case because it could be life threatening.

There are a number of people who have skin allergies. Skin allergy is the trickiest of all for two reasons,
1. No matter how hard you try, sometimes you just cannot escape from the allergen.
2. It can become a source of embarrassment if it defaces the individual.

Skin allergies usually appear in the form of eczema, skin rash and itching. Mostly, people install air purifiers inside their homes in order to get rid of the allergens in the air. Air purifiers are quite effective and are easily accessible too. In addition to preventive measures, you should keep anti-histamine medication at home in case you need quick relief. However, the best preventive solution is to strengthen your immune system in order to ensure lesser attacks in future.
