Alternative Allergy Treatments

Allergy TreatmentsAllergy occurs when our immune system reacts to a foreign substance we have touched or ingested. The symptoms we experience due to our allergy are actually triggered by our own body in order to protect us, and not from the substance itself. In most cases, the substance that contains the allergen is actually harmless in individuals who do not suffer from the allergy. Symptoms of these allergies can range from very mild, to very harmful depending on the type of allergy. Medications are available both over the counter and as prescription in order to control and lessen the allergy symptoms we experience. There are also other treatments available, that many claim to beneficial when it comes to controlling allergic outbreaks.

Herbal Medications

Many herbal medications are available for individuals who suffer from various types of allergies. For individuals who experience lung and breathing problems, there are herbal teas available that are said to make breathing easier. Many individuals who suffer from symptoms like shortness of breath find these teas to be helpful. Other all natural herbal medications are crafted to reduce nasal congestion.

Allergic Rhinitis

One popular alternative treatment for allergic rhinitis that has shown a lot of promise in studies has been butterbur. Many individuals have reported that butterbur works just as well, if not better than prescribed and over the counter allergy medications. Other herbs that have shown promise in the treatment of allergic rhinitis have been different Chinese herb mixes, as well as biminne. These substances were tested against placebo affects, and in several studies have yielded results as promising as several medications that are now available over the market.

Keep in mind that herbal medications and mixes are not without side effects. Many individuals report that they feel jittery or drowsy after taking different herbal medications. Always consult your doctor before taking any herbal medication, especially if you are currently on prescription medication.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is part of traditional Chinese medicine that has been used for centuries in reducing the symptoms of many chronic diseases. These diseases also include allergic rhinitis, asthma, and breathing complications. Acupuncture involves sticking needles into the skin at certain parts of the body. This is said to restore the “vital balance of flows” that each individual has.
Keep in mind that studies conflict as to whether or not acupuncture is a viable form of medicine in treating chronic diseases. Talk with your doctor before proceeding if you are interested in acupuncture.
