Allergy Medications
Allergies occur when the immune system detects a dangerous foreign substance, and attempts to protect us from harm that this substance may bring. Usually the substance is generally harmless, but the over reactions our body causes can actually be quite bothersome and dangerous. Symptoms of allergies range from very mild to very severe, and it is important for you to know how your allergies affect you personally. Allergens can affect every individual differently. If it is your first time experiencing allergy from a given substance please consult a doctor as to what option is best for you.
Fortunately, there are many options available for individuals who would like to lessen the symptoms that allergies bring. Some of these medications must be prescribed by doctors, while others are available over the counter. Due to the rise of methamphetamine, many allergy medications are now sold behind the counter, but are still available for purchase.
Antihistamines
Antihistamines are the most commonly used medication to alleviate the symptoms that come along with many different types of allergies. Antihistamines may come in many different types of medications including pills, nasal sprays, and eye drops. These medications are generally available over the counter, but there are also antihistamines that have to be prescribed by doctors. Over the counter antihistamines include Benadryl, Claritin, and Zyrtec among others. Prescription antihistamines include Clarinex and Allegra among other medications.
Antihistamines work, because they decrease the efficiency of ‘Histamine” in the body. Histamine is released by the immune system, and then attaches itself to receptors in blood cells. Antihistamines work by blocking histamine receptors. These medications have also been known to cause drowsiness.
Decongestants
Decongestants are generally used to clear up nasal and chest congestion for individuals suffering from allergy symptoms. Many individuals also take these medications to lessen the affects of illnesses such as the common cold. Many individuals find it beneficial to take decongestants a long with antihistamines to more effectively relieve their symptoms. Only do this if your doctor says it is ok.
Decongestants come in many forms, including over the counter remedies such as Sudafed and Afrin, as well as medications that must be prescribed such as Claritin-D.
Decongestants may cause a rise in blood pressure, and you should always consult your doctor before taking any form of medication with another medication. Talk to your pharmacist about which allergy medication is right for you.
