Allergic Rhinitis: What is it?
Has your nose ever been runny or your eyes watery? Have you had nasal congestion, headache or itching in any part of your body when a certain season approaches? For instance haying season? If yes, then you are feeling the symptoms of allergic rhinitis, also called hay fever or nasal allergy.
Allergic reactions are included in our everyday lives now. All around the world, you will see people with tissues in their hands. Ever wonder why? The reason is the presence of minute particles in the air like dust and pollen that cause all sorts of allergies on a daily basis. These particles are lightweight and travel with the wind easily. They are called allergens. Pollen is the most common allergen. Some allergies occur only in certain seasons like plant allergies.
The Process of Allergic Rhinitis: The amount of pollen in the air and the severity of your reaction to it determine your symptoms. Some allergies spring up only in certain seasons or at a certain age. When you are exposed to an allergen, histamine is produced in your body that starts the process of inflammation. A normally safe substance can very well cause an allergic reaction.
The histamine starts causing allergic symptoms in your body. Stuffy nose, nasal congestion, watery eyes, headaches and coughing are the most common ones. If the histamine goes into overdrive, your condition may lead to death. Anti-histamine medication is very popular everywhere. Your nearest chemist or general store can help you stock up on anti-histamines and stay fit. Still, do consult a doctor as well.
Allergic rhinitis can be treated by avoiding allergens and treating yourself. A well-managed allergic rhinitis will lead to a better life as well as reduced infection risks. Stay indoors at peak times like midday to avoid exposure to the high pollen count.
This hay season, make prevention your first priority!
