When the inside of your nose becomes swollen or inflamed after breathing in some allergen, the condition is called Allergic Rhinitis. Mainly, it involves irritation of the eyes or nose. You can be allergic to things like dander and pollen. It is a hereditary illness also known as Hay Fever. Moreover, the chances of you getting Rhinitis are 50% if your parent has a respiratory disease like asthma.

An allergy is triggered when indoor or outdoor allergens are encountered. When a patient of Allergic Rhinitis breathes in dust or pollen, a chemical is released that causes swelling, itching and produces mucus in the body. Indoor allergens can be dust mites or dropping of cockroaches found inside the house.

• Spring symptoms indicate an allergy to tree pollen.
• Summer symptoms indicate an allergy to weed and grass pollen.
• Symptoms in late summer indicate allergies to the ragweed plant.

Skin tests by specialized immunologists and blood tests can help diagnose your allergies and their causes. Your reactions to allergens vary every season and it is important to identify all the causes.

The Signs:

Some common signs are headaches, sneezing, coughing, smell problems, itching and nasal congestion.

The Remedies:

The best way to avoid Allergic Rhinitis is to stay away from the allergens as much as possible. Your medication will be based upon the severity of your symptoms and factors like age and present medical condition.

You may take anti-histamines or sprays that are easily available at your nearest pharmacy but they lead to side-effects in most cases. They only eliminate the symptoms for a short time and allergies recur soon after this remedy.

Immunotherapy is another option. Gradually increasing doses of allergens are given to the person to increase immunity through new anti-bodies.

Overall, you can improve your health if you avoid all allergens. Quit smoking and stay away from passive smoke as well. Avoid stimulating foods and concentrate on more nutrient-rich products.
