Allergic Conjunctivitis
Allergic conjunctivitis is a term that is used to describe allergies of the eye. These allergies can cause redness of the eye, among other symptoms. The most noteworthy of all symptoms associated with allergic conjunctivitis is having itchiness of the eyes. During allergic conjunctivitis, both eyes are usually affected although one eye can experience symptoms more so than the other. Many different allergies have been associated with this condition, including allergies to dander, dust, and pollen.
Symptoms of Allergic Conjunctivitis
There are only a few symptoms associated with allergic conjunctivitis, all of which are not considered life threatening. Many individuals report that the symptoms can be quite uncomfortable. Symptoms have been known to include:
• Itchiness of the eyes
• Watery eyes
• Sore eyes
• Swollen eyes, and areas around the eye
• Stinging of the eyes
• Burn of the eyes
These symptoms are most likely to occur during the spring and fall, and have often been linked with hay fever or allergic rhinitis. Many allergies also produce similar symptoms that can be confused for allergic conjunctivitis.
How is it diagnosed?
Doctors diagnose allergic conjunctivitis by comparing current symptoms to your medical history. If the medical history includes various bouts with eye allergy, there is a good chance you may be suffering from allergic conjunctivitis. Several tests may also be run by your doctor. Positive response to given medicine is also a way many doctors determine if you are suffering from allergic conjunctivitis.
Treatment and Prevention
Most individuals report that the best way to deal with allergic conjunctivitis is through the use of eye drops. Eye drops such as “Visine” can help individuals deal with many of the symptoms associated with allergic conjunctivitis. Anti histamines have also been used to deal with the associated symptoms.
The best way to avoid this condition is by avoidance all together. If you can determine what it is that is causing your symptoms, and eliminate them from your daily life and routine, you have a better chance of avoiding your symptoms. Always consult your doctor before taking any medications, as they are the only ones who can diagnose allergic conjunctivitis.
