All About Food Allergies

Food allergies are so common these days that everybody knows about them. They are caused when your body’s immune system becomes weak and responds inappropriately to a harmless substance. These substances are called allergens. Many people confuse food intolerance with food allergy but they are both absolutely different from each other. Unlike food intolerance, allergies affect the body organs. Another difference between the two is that food intolerance can be caused by a medication while an allergy is only triggered by a specific food item.

Food allergies start showing symptoms within a few hours after consumption. You might start seeing signs of a reaction on your skin in the form of rashes, blotches and itching. Your digestive system along with the breathing pattern might respond differently. There is a good chance your airways might swell up which could lead to severe breathing problem. More severe reaction can cause diarrhea and nausea. All these symptoms usually appear in less than 24 hours after consuming the allergen food item. As soon as you start seeing the reaction, recall whatever you ate and you will be able to figure out the particular cause. You have to be careful, otherwise, persistent attacks can be fatal.

When your body’s immune system encourages an allergen, it reacts immediately by fighting it. In the process of combating the allergen, the immune system produces a chemical which is known as ‘histamine’. This chemical tries to reverse the attack and consequently you see the reaction on your body in the form of skin abnormalities and breathing problems.

Once you are able to identify the nature of allergy, it gets easier to treat it. You can change your diet in order to avoid the food that causes allergic reaction. In order to ensure you do not miss the nutritional content, you can find a substitute of the food item. Before buying food, you should check the label and see that the allergen does not exist in any quantity. Most of the people are allergic to food items like peanuts, milk and shellfish. Instead of these, you can opt for soy milk or rice milk and other fruits which contain similar nutrients. Also, try to avoid preserved foods which often have many hidden ingredients and your allergen could be one of them.

Everybody knows the importance of healthy diet. Balanced diet with a good amount of nutrients not only prevents all types of diseases but also help you maintain your body weight. If you take care of your diet, you will have no allergic problem in the first place. Many people opt for natural treatments through herbal supplements and acupuncture along with weekly shots and anti-histamine medication. If you do not get any severe symptoms but are tired of figuring out what is causing your nasal congestion, you should watch what you eat because most probably there is a food item which is causing the reaction. Allergies can be contained as soon as they start as long as you eat sensibly.
