Alcohol Allergy

Every day millions of people spanning the globe enjoy their favorite alcoholic beverage. What you may not know is that many people are actually allergic to alcohol and are unable to consume the substance at all. Allergies occur when the body perceives a foreign substance as harmful, and reacts with the given symptoms in order to protect the body from infection and disease. Knowing this, it is not surprising then that there are those of us who suffer from alcohol allergy. Alcohol is technically a poison, so that means that our body is technically right in its reaction. Although the amount usually consumed by most people on an average night is not toxic and generally harmless (except for the hangover in the morning.)

Symptoms of Alcohol Allergy

In most cases, it is not the alcohol itself that is responsible for the allergic reaction, but rather the ingredients of the beverage. Different grains in beers or grapes in various wines have been known to carry allergens that affect individuals. Yeast (for fermentation) can also cause allergic reaction in some people. It is important that you identify what you are allergic to, and take the necessary precautions to ensure that you do not consume any products that contain these allergens.

Symptoms:

• Hives and Swelling – If you experience hives or swelling after ingesting an alcoholic beverage, please consult your doctor on what step to take next. Make sure to determine how severe your reaction is. If the reaction is severe enough to warrant immediate medical attention, call an ambulance or drive to the hospital.
• Histamine – Many drinks that contain alcohol include histamine. This is formed when the yeast ferments. The presence of hives can cause rash, irritated skin, and complications with breathing.
• Flushed Skin – Flushing of the face and other skin around the body.
Because individuals are usually consuming alcohol when they experience symptoms associated with alcohol allergy (and therefore are inebriated), many do not seek medical help as soon as they should. If you are experiencing what you believe to be allergy symptoms from your alcoholic beverage, contact a medical professional immediately.
